The three most important concepts that stuck out to me in “Why Identity is a lie we can’t live without” are about politics, culture, and identities. It speaks about how different people’s identities are and how even though people are categorized into a certain group doesn’t mean that’s all to their identity, people have other subcategories that make them who they are. The paper uses an example of people’s sexual orientation to demonstrate what they mean about subcategories. Other examples can be religion, hobbies, or even someone’s job.
The first major concept in the article is culture. The author writes about people becoming recognized a certain way being or certain features of themselves they can’t control. While culture definitely has a major effect on how someone is perceived, it cannot be the only factor that divides groups.
The second, most obvious, important topic in the paper is identities. People gain identities by what they say to people or what people say about them. Someone could have never met a person and already know how they act based on hear say.
The finals important concept is politics. This is a major topic in the United States that divides this country the most. People become offended if they have different views than you and will often break a relationship. This gives people a major identity because of the popularity of the idea of democrat or republican. Once you say what you are, it sticks with you and that person.
