Rose house is in a poor neighborhood. The neighborhood consist of old white folks, young black families, and immigrant Mexican. Rose house is small and most of the thing that they have is old and used. His father gets most of these things from a secondary shop when he spends some time there. Rose mostly grew up around old people there was no kids on his block besides Keith who is his best friend. His neighborhood had violence in it due to various situation but never found his self in danger. Even when the local gangs would smack him around he was never really in danger because they never saw him as a victim or and enemy. What mark Rose wasn’t the violence but the subtler. Rose home and neighborhood was similar to Coates but how they interacted with their home and neighborhood was very different. Coates would go around fearing the risk of danger to his body from his neighborhood while Rose would go around looking for something interesting to happen. Coates was usually around kids his own age and Rose was surrounded by old people.

What Rose means by that quote is that nothing ever really goes on in his neighborhood. He’s bored and probably tired of hanging out with old people. What makes his situation worst is that he’s in a poor neighborhood, his father is ill, and his mother is working hard long shifts to provide for the family. The reason he says “Sinbad and Cinderella couldn’t have been more fanciful,” is because he would love to go on the adventures they went on. He wanted something more than just growing up with old people.
