  • What vision of the future have academics and scholars pinned on Hawaii’s high-rate of intermarriage? On what facts and hopes have they based this vision? In Olson’s view, how likely is their vision of a racially-mixed future to be accurate?
  • Many people in Hawaii come from the island and have been there for generations and generations. But after much contact with people, tourists and ships, the island has gained so many nationalities. Olson also comments on the “beautifulness” of the people there due to the many mixing of the cultures and comments on the scholars and the knowledge given to them by most of their parents intermarriage.

  • What are the implications for “ethnic thinking” of recent genetic research showing that “every group is a mixture of many previous groups, a fleeting collection of genetic variants drawn from a shared genetic legacy” (253)?
  • The implications require us to further our thinking into the mixtures of groups in the problems of race. Most of the population of Hawaii came from either the people there at the time or the intergenerational high rate of prostitution at the time. The usually poor unroyal women group of Hawaii would swim out to the cargo ships going time and offer sexual favors for items such as clothes, nails, etc… This then brings the discussion back to the point where basically everybody on the islands came from the original people there but by the prostitution and mixing of nationalities. With that being said racism on the island seems to not make sense because everyone there derived from the same people! That could also be said to be the same for the rest of the world considering we all started off as basic tribes and moved into an extravagant civilization with different nationalities.
